Ed Westfall is best known for his defensive ability.. . His has been the job of covering the high scoring left wingers like Chicago's Bobby Hull and Montreal's Frank Mahovlich . . . That he has done with great efficiency. . . Until the past Winter, his career high for a season had been 18 goals and his total for the entire 9 years in the N.H.L. was only 153... Last season, though, the suave, sharply dressed Westfall scored 25 goals and in so doing collected an expensive foreign sports car from a friend who bet he wouldn't reach the 20 goal plateau . .. His regular position was right wing but late in the season when Bob Orr was rested and Dallas Smith was injured, he took a regular turn at his old position, defense . .. He starred in junior hockey at Niagara Falls, Ont. as a defenseman and his early years with the Bruins were at that position . In the off-season he is a sales representative for a brewery. . . He is a year round resident of Pelham, N.H.
